The Saskatoon Water Discovery Centre (SWDC) is more than a building — it is a world of imagination, science, and storytelling. When our doors open, visitors will step into a transformative space where art, technology, and nature come together to celebrate the power of water. This article takes you inside the types of exhibits and experiences we are preparing to bring to Saskatoon.

From live exhibits to immersive projections, from glowing jellyfish to freshwater ecosystems, the Centre will offer unforgettable encounters for families, students, and visitors of all ages.

Live Exhibits That Bring Water to Life

Our live exhibits will showcase the incredible diversity of freshwater ecosystems. Visitors will be able to observe real plants and aquatic species up close, learning how they interact, adapt, and survive.

These displays will highlight:

  • freshwater fish from Canadian lakes and rivers

  • aquatic plants and micro-habitats

  • fascinating species with unique adaptations

  • the interconnected systems of water, soil, and climate

Each live exhibit will be designed with education and conservation in mind, helping visitors understand why freshwater protection matters.

Dive Into Wonder: The Underwater Tunnel

The Underwater Tunnel

Walk beneath shimmering water as fish glide above you. Gentle ambient lighting and slow-moving currents will create a calming and immersive experience — bringing the feeling of being underwater without ever getting wet.

Touch Tanks and Hands-On Learning

Learning is most powerful when you can feel it.

Our touch tanks will allow children and adults to safely interact with:

  • freshwater invertebrates

  • smooth stones shaped by river currents

  • plant roots and aquatic vegetation

  • water flow demonstrations

These stations encourage curiosity, sensory learning, and respectful interaction, helping visitors connect physically with Saskatchewan’s freshwater environments.

A Mesmerizing Jellyfish Exhibit

The jellyfish exhibit will be one of the most magical spaces in the Centre. Soft lighting, slow movement, and gentle currents will create a dreamlike atmosphere. Visitors will see:

  • moon jellies

  • bioluminescent-style displays

  • educational panels about their life cycles

  • conservation messages about fragile ocean habitats

This exhibit blends art, biology, and quiet reflection — a calm, glowing space for all ages.

  • respect for water

  • responsibility to future generations

  • the spiritual significance of rivers and lakes

  • traditional ecological knowledge

  • cultural practices linked to water

This will be one of the most important areas in the entire Centre, created collaboratively with Elders, knowledge keepers, and Indigenous artists.

Wildlife Education & Science Experiments

Visitors will learn about wildlife through:

  • species displays

  • habitat reconstructions

  • ecological storytelling

  • hands-on stations

And for young scientists, the Centre will host rotating science experiments, such as:

  • water filtration

  • buoyancy demonstrations

  • pH testing

  • ice melting patterns

  • erosion and sediment flow

These activities blend play with meaningful scientific understanding.
